Al-Ghazali Holistic Education Concept: An Analysis of Relevance to Indonesia's National Education System

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the concept of Al-Ghazali's educational thinking, as well as explore its relevance to the educational context in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative approach with the type of Library Research. Al-Ghozali's thoughts can be useful for the world of education, the government and educators to be an inspiration for improving education in Indonesia which is increasingly qualified. The result of this paper is that al-Ghazali's educational thinking is religious-ethical. The goal of education according to al-Ghozali is that human perfection can be achieved if you are willing to seek knowledge and then practice through the knowledge you learn can bring you closer to Allah and eventually live happily in this world and the hereafter. Al-Ghazali explained that a good education should not only provide knowledge of the physical and social world, but also the importance of forming a strong character rooted in Islamic values. An educator must master a discipline and be able to practice it completely according to his field of education. As well as having a nature of trust and diligent work, being gentle and affectionate towards students. Students are placed as objects as well as subjects and establish ten ideal criteria that students must pursue in order to succeed in education. Al-Ghazali mentioned four categories of scientific classification, namely; the classification of sharia (religion) and 'aqliyah (intellect); theoretical and practical sciences; knowledge presented (hudhûri) and acquired (hushûli); The knowledge of fardhu 'ain and fardhu kifâyah. Al-Ghazali's teaching method emphasizes that teachers who provide knowledge are required to use the educational methods used, including uswatun khasanah, riyadhah, mujahadah. The concept of al-Ghozali's thought is in accordance with the applicable laws on education in Indonesia
